Can You Prevent Lice?

Lice are a common problem, especially for parents with young children in preschool or elementary school. The reason for this, primarily, is that children are naturally loving and friendly. It doesn’t occur to young children that sharing too much with their friends can cause sickness or lice to spread. Thankfully, lice are easily treated and almost as easily prevented.

Tips for Preventing Lice

Even though it is good for children to make close friendships, parents can gently teach children not to share anything that comes in close contact with hair (i.e. hair ties, brushes, combs, ear buds and headphones, hats, helmets, scarves, etc.).

If you hear of a lice infestation at your child’s school or daycare center, pull your child out of school as soon as possible and check for lice. If you find an infestation, treat it immediately and keep your child at home until you know the infestation has passed.

Recognizing Lice and Symptoms that Might Indicate Lice

Full grown lice are about the size of sesame seeds and tend to be grey or tan in color. Eggs, or nits, are tiny and white. They attach themselves to the roots of the hair so look close to the scalp. Look carefully for movement if you are unsure that you’ve found lice. The adult lice will wiggle and move fairly quickly, especially if you poke at them. Pay close attention to the areas of the head that are behind the ears and the nape of the neck. In fact, if you are in the Denver area, give us a call!

Symptoms of lice infestation include severe itching of the scalp, a rash along the nape of the neck or behind the ears, and possible soreness in around the rash. WebMD has a very informative article on lice also.
